Watch my question on the government's proposed 'tourism tax'
In what world does the government see the tourism and hospitality industry growing under a visitor levy?
The reason I ask is that as Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Hospitality and Tourism I have yet to hear a single business say they support it.
Instead, they fear the ripple effect it will have during an already difficult time for the sector.
And the most concerning thing for me is the government cannot give a clear explanation of where the money raised will go.
My colleague Richard Foord MP asked whether this tax was created for cities with high, guaranteed footfall and a high proportion of wealthy overseas visitors.
It’s a completely fair question. Yet again this policy demonstrates a shocking lack of knowledge about the rural parts of our country.
