Our current water industry is broken, and few places know this better than Kingsbridge.
Last winter, it felt as though every time heavy rain came the town flooded, often with sewage flowing down the streets.
One of the issues which came up during my meeting with South West Water’s CEO was the installation of a new tidal valve to reduce flooding in the town.
This installation was due to happen next month but has experienced minor delays. I stressed to him the urgent need for these works to happen to mitigate against the floods I know so many dread every year. I hope to have an update to share on this soon.
This will hopefully be a positive step forward. But it does not distract from the broader challenges in the water industry. What was shocking was how many areas I had to raise during my recent meeting.
Brokenbury, Townstal, Compton, Brixham, Littlehempston…I could go on. The list of failings is enormous.
While it is necessary to work with these companies to find solutions, given the way the sector is currently set up, it does not change the fact that our water industry needs reform, starting by looking at the ownership model.
