Statement: Government approves Jackdaw gas field

It is alarming that the government has approved the Jackdaw gas field on the same day the UN is warning global warming is rapidly breaching 1.5C.

We’re nowhere near where we should be in our transition to renewables. A new Energy Wealth Fund is welcome – but this should have been created decades ago.

Today’s decision cannot become a precedent. A decision on the Rosebank oilfield is imminent - the government must ignore the fossil fuel lobby and oppose it.

Approving it after the hottest summer on record would be an illogical and dangerous move. How long will it take before governments take the climate crisis seriously?
