The Education Select Committee has launched a new consultation on reading for pleasure

Reading for pleasure has long given both stimulation and sanctuary to children and adults across the globe.

It is an essential building block of learning and understanding the world around us.

But today, with just one in three children aged eight to 18 reading in their spare time, we appear to be in the midst of a generational shift.

To understand this decline, the Education Select Committee has launched a new inquiry focused on reading pleasure, the decline of reading as well as what can be done to reverse, including the role of parents, carers, libraries and teachers.

To guide the inquiry, we want to hear from families, schools and other stakeholders across the country.

You can submit evidence until Friday 9th January, 2026 via the link below.
