Today, the Liberal Democrats used our Opposition Day in parliament to demand the government reverse its delayed New Hospitals Programme.
Labour entered office promising an end to sticking plaster politics. But what they’ve replaced it with is kicking can politics. Social care, dentistry, the water industry, and new hospitals all kicked down the road to deal with later.
But people are suffering now because of their dithering. Nearly all of Torbay Hospital is currently unfit for purpose and yet patients and staff must wait until 2032 for repairs to begin.
Reversing the delay to the New Hospitals Programme isn’t just about fixing buildings. It’s about making the NHS more efficient and productive, and, above everything else, restoring public trust in a health system we rely on every single day.
