Today, I spoke in the Westminster Hall debate on the e-petition calling for the UK to re-join the European Union. I want to thank the 330 constituents in South Devon who signed the petition, placing us in the top 5% nationally.
Reflecting on the lasting impact of Brexit, I still believe it was a catastrophic decision for our country. From burdening businesses with unnecessary red tape to limiting opportunities for our youth, the consequences are clear. Our country has been impoverished by Brexit in so many ways - economically, culturally, and politically. Leaving the EU remains one of the worst decisions this country has made, and it is what motivated me to enter politics.
It’s a tragedy that our children and grandchildren won’t have the same opportunities we once had — to travel Europe, develop skills, build cultural understanding, and gain language proficiency. Those experiences enriched us and were key to our personal and professional growth. Unfortunately, Brexit has taken that away.
That’s why I believe it’s high time the Government agreed to a youth mobility scheme with the EU. Last week, I welcomed the PPA agreement, which recognised the need to create a youth opportunity scheme, including apprenticeships, including apprenticeships. We all understand the need; let's hope that the Government will go further and address it.
