In May 2016, Boris Johnson said leaving the single market and customs union would weaken our economy and hurt jobs, trade, and investment. Despite this, his party did it anyway.
The result has been terrible: an act of economic self-harm no other country would dream of.
Exports to the EU have fallen by 27% since Brexit, GDP has declined, and across South Devon and the country, fishers, farmers, and nearly every business trying to trade with the EU have found their efforts tangled up in red tape.
Today, nine years on from the referendum vote, a new Government can begin rebuilding our economic ties with our closest partners in Europe.
The Government should approach next week’s summit with the EU with boldness and ambition – not the timidity they have shown so far.
In a speech today, I outlined what I’d like to see discussed when the UK and EU meet on Monday.
