Education is about far more than the grades a child receives. It is about empowering every child to become the absolute best they were born to be – ensuring they leave school equipped with the life skills, confidence, and resilience needed to lead a happy, healthy, and successful life.
Lessons that foster interpersonal, creative, and emotional skills have their place alongside traditional subjects. This is a vital fact that is often lost in our current narrow, overly exam focused approach to assessment, which, as a Government interim report recognises, is letting some young people down.
Children deserve an exam system that offers choice and equips them with the skills they need – no matter which path they choose to follow.
At a Westminster Hall debate this week, in my first official speech as Schools Spokesperson for the Lib Dems, I was proud to call for this.
