Could you pay a £637,000 bill?
That’s the average inheritance bill facing farmers in South Devon after the Government’s changes to the Agricultural Property Relief and Business Property Relief.
I know this because after the policy was announced I sent out a survey to farmers in South Devon, and the results I received were devastating.
85% of farmers in South Devon expect to be impacted by this policy change – far more than the limited numbers the Chancellor promised.
And 44% face a bill of at least £300,000 – with the highest standing at an eye-watering £3m.
Given farmers are an integral part of the rural economy, help support our food security, and play a key role in tackling climate change, why would the Government want to put them under yet more pressure, especially after the incredibly challenging years they’ve already faced.
Today, at a Westminster Hall debate, I asked the Government this question.
