British farming is at breaking point. Just this week, at the NFU annual meeting, farmers expressed their worries about not just their long-term future but how they will make it to the end of the year.
There’s a cash flow crisis in farming. Part of this is being driven by recent Government policy, but there’s also something else happening that’s been harming our farmers for years.
According to research from Riverford, just 25% of farmers believe the Big Six supermarkets adequately support British farming. That’s shocking – but, looking at the data, can you blame the other 75% for feeling this way?
Supermarkets saw a 97% surge in profits last year alone, yet they are not handing on a fair share of that to producers. To be in a world where supermarket profits are soaring while farmers are struggling to make ends meet is just wrong. There’s a power imbalance here that is neither sustainable nor fair.We urgently need to strengthen the Groceries Code Adjudicator.
Today, at a Westminster Hall debate, I called on the Government to do just that and work faster to remove the David v. Goliath feel of farmer supermarket relations.
