I was proud to briefly speak about my amendment to the Planning and Infrastructure Bill last night.
This amendment would’ve required housing development applications to include a provision for green spaces within 15 minutes of new homes, something which is vital for a happier, healthier life.
Being in nature is good for the body and mind, and yet we live in one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world. It’s shocking, given how good we know access to nature is for us, that 38% of people lack green or blue space within a 15-minute walk.
It’s high time that changed.
But I fear the government has missed an opportunity with this bill to make it a requirement for any new housing development to be designed in a way that is good for nature, the environment, and the health and wellbeing of residents.
