“To have a whole school approach that is fully inclusive does mean being a brave leader and doing what’s right for the school, rather than what might be seen as the approach that would be favoured if there was an inspection.”
This statement from Annamarie Hassal MBE, the CEO of The National Association for Special Educational Needs, sums up the challenge that so many school leaders face when it comes to inclusivity.
While no one doubted one word Ofsted inspections had to go, the new report card system announced last month generated widespread concern from teachers.
The Headteachers I spoke to were particularly worried about ‘inclusion’ would be measured in these new inspections, and I hope the Government will provide some clarity here during the ongoing consultation period.
As Ms. Hassal points out, schools are currently caught in a double bind where the approach that supports SEND pupils is not the same one that would impress inspectors. This kind of situation isn’t good for the schools.
