Earlier today, the Government announced its 10-year NHS plan. In the Chamber, I spoke in support of the shift from hospital-based care to community care, along with the exciting potential of digital transformation.
The plan has the potential to radically change how we access healthcare across England. I was glad to hear the Secretary of State confirm it won’t be a 'one size fits all' approach — a crucial point for rural areas like ours, where people often travel long distances to reach hospital care.
I also raised the importance of moving from treatment to prevention, and asked whether discussions are taking place with MHCLG and the Treasury about ring-fenced funding for leisure centres, swimming pools, outdoor education, and safe cycle routes. Supporting healthy lifestyles, especially for children and young people, is essential — and prevention saves money in the long run.
