I’m sure many of you are aware of recent cases of foot-and-mouth disease in Germany, leading to a UK ban on cattle, sheep, and pig imports from the country.
Today an Urgent Question was asked in the House of Commons this afternoon, with many MPs highlighting their concerns and asking the Government to do everything possible to protect and support British farmers.
Speaking after many of my colleagues had already posed questions on the measures in place, I asked the Minister whether the current situation has given the Government the impetus to move forward with securing a veterinary deal with the EU.
I can assure you that I will be closely monitoring this situation and remain ready to support South Devon’s farmers. The German Agricultural Minister has announced today that no further cases of foot-and-mouth disease have been found in recent days, so I am hopeful that the outbreak will be contained and will not reach the UK.
