Watch my contribution to the Renters Reform Bill

This week, I spoke during the Renters Reform Bill debate, which, if passed, will modernise the regulation of our country’s insecure private rented sector.

I support this aim. For too long in this country, owning property has been used to create additional wealth rather than provide a safe, secure, and warm home for tenants.

Not all landlords are bad, but there are some bad apples out there, and those who are unable to get on the housing ladder or actively choose to rent, must be able to live in peace knowing they will not be evicted on the whim of their landlord.

There are other measures in the bill which will impact those working in agriculture or in the military – both of which are very important for us given South Devon’s strong farming community and the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth.

In my speech, on Monday, I called for the final version of the Renters Reform Bill to include the following measures:

  • Give local authorities powers to act against negligent landlords making tenants live in unsuitable accommodation.

  • Extend the decent homes standard to accommodation provided by the Minister of Defence for use as service family accommodation.

  • Ensure agricultural workers are covered by the grounds for repossession regardless of whether they are employed or self-employed.

  • Give tenants the right to request a pet, which landlords must consider and cannot unreasonably refuse.
