Whether or not the Prime Minister knew the depths of Lord Mandelson and Jeffrey Epstein’s relationship, the fact remains that Starmer knowingly appointed a US ambassador with ties to a convicted paedophile.
This was a clear, monumental error in judgement and adds to the feeling that this government is lurching from one crisis to another.
With Trump in the White House, we need an ambassador who will stand up to the President and represent British values.
The Foreign Affairs Committee must now have a role in scrutinising Mandelson’s successor before they are appointed.
Our country cannot be put in a position again where we could be embarrassed on the international stage because this government failed to carry out appropriate levels of due diligence.
