Last spring, the government finally confirmed the extension of the Adoption and Special Guardianship Support Fund, but only after a delay and with a shocking cut in funding. This was a particularly poor decision given how high demand for services is.
Thankfully, it seems they have learnt their lesson. This Thursday, the government confirmed the fund will be extended for the next financial year.
While this extension is welcome, it’s not enough. We still need a long-term financial settlement for the fund and a full restoration of support.
Remember this fund helps the most vulnerable children in our society, many of whom suffered profound trauma which can reverberate throughout their lives.
We must give them the support needed to help. At a Westminster Hall debate, organised by my colleague Alison Bennet, I called for the government to do this.
