Watch my call for all new social housing to be equipped with solar panels

I was disappointed not to be called to speak on the Sunshine Bill this morning, brought to Parliament by my friend Max Cheltenham.

However I did remind the Conservative shadow minister that when the previous government scrapped the Zero Homes Standard they did so because of pressure from house builders. I asked him to give reassurance that his party will support changes in regulations on solar panels - even if there is resistance from house builders.

He was enthusiastically supportive of the Bill - it’s such a shame we didn’t see the same enthusiasm during the last Parliament as so much time has been lost.

1.2 million homes built since 2016 when the legislation was supposed to come into force. That’s 1.2 million homes that should have been built with solar panels - reducing our carbon emissions, increasing energy security and lowering householder bills.

I sincerely hope the Labour government makes the changes required in legislation to mandate clean energy in all new builds.
