Delaying the Schools White Paper, and with it long-awaited SEND reforms, until 2026 is an absolute betrayal of every child with special educational needs and disabilities and their families.
SEND services are already in crisis. Parents are worn out by fighting a broken system, children are waiting months or even years for vital support, and local authority budgets are at breaking point.
While families were left in limbo, the Education Secretary prioritised fighting a deputy leadership campaign over fixing the mess she inherited. Now, to kick the can down the road until 2026 is an admission that the Government has no plan, and no sense of urgency.
We need urgent action. The future of thousands of vulnerable children is at stake, and this Government is failing them completely.
The Liberal Democrats have already laid out our five principles for SEND reform and would welcome the Government to work with us on a cross-party basis to ensure reforms are delivered quickly.
