I recently spoke with Fishing News about the incredible opportunity available to us to transform our fishing industry as we negotiate a new trade agreement with the EU in 2026.
I know from having met fishers in South Devon how frustrating the current trade arrangements are – and I’ve been pushing hard both in and out of Westminster to ensure that whatever strategy we set for trade with the EU it is one rooted first and foremost in our fishers’ interests.
Having raised this in a Westminster Hall debate at the start of this month, I reiterated in Fishing News the three essential principles this new strategy should follow:
>Fair access
>Sustainable management
>Economic support for our seafood industry
I’ll continue to push for this new strategy and for an improved trading relationship for our fishers as we approach the renegotiation date.
