The legislative framework laid out in the Kings Speech today looks like progress. I was pleased to see a commitment to clean energy, raising educational standards and renters’ rights. But nothing on building standards or insulating homes.
The promise to halve the incidence of violence against women and girls is welcome - I wait to see how they propose to do this but including the intention at this stage of a new parliament is encouraging.
I’m also pleased to see children’s wellbeing being mentioned - will we see a renewed emphasis on creative and arts education? I hope so.
As for health, it’s good to see a commitment to improving health prevention measures and better mental health service provision - but where is the voice of carers? The Liberal Democrats want to make sure the voice of carers is heard loud and clear.
And of course I was glad to hear the King say that his government will seek to reset our relationship with European partners and work to improve the United Kingdom’s trade and investment relationship with the European Union. We can all see how badly this is needed - to help struggling businesses and our stagnant economy. I hope we can see some progress on veterinary agreements, artists visas and school group visits as a starting point.
Some good things in there but I will be scrutinising very closely as there are clearly things I’d like to see move further and deeper.
Sadly I listened to all of this, but not in the Houses of Parliament as I was unable to attend today due to having caught Covid - which was a huge personal disappointment. So no original photographs from me today!
