Dearth of affordable housing pushing locals out

The stories in this article are really troubling and touch on the fact that rural communities will disappear if we don’t boost the availability of social and affordable housing.

Building communities hinges on having homes that local people can afford. That should be obvious, but to this point, the government’s response to the housing crisis is to rush ahead and build new homes with little to no concern for how affordable they are for locals.

That’s how we’ve ended up in a situation where the average house price is 14x the average salary in the South Hams. And where new housing estates, like Inglewood, are appearing with no new amenities.

For too long, the government has turned a blind eye while developers prioritise profit over everything else. If we don’t address that we’ll continue to see schools shrink, shops close, and villages gradually empty out.
