Charming the worms

I shouldn't think many parliamentary candidates have pirate festivals and international worm charming championships in their patch... but today it was the turn of the worms!

A brilliant day out in Blackawton, watching the locals use every trick they can think of to charm worms out of the soil.

Hammering, rolling, drenching, knocking... but the team with the saxophone were doing best from what I could see. Clearly the worms liked their riffs.

More fancy dress, the local pub doing a roaring trade and a brilliant community vibe.

With12 pubs closing every day in the UK, it's easy to see why events like this are so important, bringing the community together. But we need to look urgently at how we can support village and rural pubs which can be such an important part of the glue in small communities.
